The Scripture readings are Genesis 13 and Philippians 2:1-11.

“The most striking thing to me in all of this story is this business of looking and seeing, and its relationship to faith. Lot chose by looking, by sight, and chose the path of easy prosperity without God. He could see that the plain of Jordan was lush and prosperous. And he chose by sight, rather than by faith. Abraham could see the same thing Lot could, but in faith he gave up that choice. And after he has chosen to trust God, after he has acted in faith, then he is invited to see: God says, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west… All the land that you see.”
